Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Merrick Garland for authorizing the raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, calling the unprecedented action “political persecution.”

“What they’ve been doing to President Trump is political persecution,” Greene told reporters on Friday. “Merrick Garland has abused his position of power as Attorney General to politically persecute Joe Biden’s enemies — and the whole purpose of this is to prevent President Trump from ever being able to hold office.”

Greene also tweeted a copy of the impeachment articles shortly after filing.

The resolution reads:

Impeaching Merrick Brian Garland, Attorney General of the United States, for endangering, compromising, and undermining the justice system of the United States by facilitating the persecution of President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s political rival, Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States.

According to Article I:

Attorney General Merrick Garland’s personal approval to seek a search warrant for the raid on the home of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, constitutes a blatant attempt to persecute a political opponent.

Attorney General Garland has taken measures to silence the voice of millions of citizens of the United States by persecuting the former duly elected and lawful President of the United States, and potential Presidential candidate, Donald J. Trump.

In Article II, Green noted that Trump, per the authority of the Executive Vesting Clause of the Constitution, “legally declassified” the documents sought by the FBI in its raid.

Green went on to say that Garland’s “effort to unseal the search warrant” on Trump’s home “constitutes an attempt to intimidate, harass, and potentially disqualify a political challenger to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.”

Garland on Thursday delivered short remarks insisting the Justice Department’s Monday raid of Trump’s home was “authorized by a federal court upon the required finding of probable cause.”

“Upholding the rule of law means applying the law evenly, without fear or favor. Under my watch, that is precisely what the Justice Department is doing,” he claimed.

Trump meanwhile noted on his platform Truth Social that he declassified all documents in question.

“Number one, it was all declassified. Number two, they didn’t need to ‘seize’ anything. They could have had it anytime they wanted without playing politics and breaking into Mar-a-Lago,” he wrote Friday.
